Description

This mulled wine recipe is like Christmas in a mug. Warm, spiced, and a little sweet, it’s the perfect drink to share with friends and family during the holidays. Serve it at your Christmas dinner, while trimming the tree, or cozying up by the fireplace.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot, Cabernet, or Zinfandel work well)
  • 1 orange, sliced (plus more for garnish)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional, but highly recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Pour the wine into a large saucepan and place over medium-low heat. Do not let it boil.
  2. Add the sliced orange, honey (or sugar), cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse into the wine. Keep the heat low so the alcohol doesn’t cook off.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the brandy and vanilla extract.
  5. Ladle into heatproof mugs or glasses, garnish with extra orange slices or a cinnamon stick, and serve warm.
