Description

Nothing says comfort quite like apple crisp with vanilla ice cream. The mix of warm apples, spices, and a crunchy topping is something you’ll want to enjoy again and again. You’ll love how easy it is to make from scratch!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Filling:

  • 6 medium apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

To Serve:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.
  2. Prepare the filling. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
  3. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  4. Time to make the topping. In a medium bowl, mix together the oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Add the cold butter cubes and, using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts, if using.
  6. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  8. Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the juices to settle.
